Dear Clients,

LONG WEEKEND SURCHARGES – BILLED BY TRUCKING COMPANIES.

We are fast approaching Public Holidays across all States.

Its become common for most trucking companies around Australia to bill a “LONG WEEKEND SURCHARGE” otherwise they simply don’t have drivers turn up for their shifts on the Public Holiday.

These amounts range from $250 - $400 per container pending the carrier.

Should Transways be picking up your containers over the long weekend, please do expect to see a Long Weekend Surcharge.

Where possible we do our best to work with Transport to avoid, but due to the scheduling of “BULK RUNS” being pushed onto truckers, it can be unavoidable should we wish to avoid wharf storage and not chew into container free days (container detention).

DP WORLD MELBOURNE - IT SYSTEM ISSUES.

Following a scheduled IT system upgrade that took place on Friday 13 September, DP World's Melbourne terminal has been experiencing significant and intermittent issues, which have impacted operations throughout the weekend and into this week. These complications have caused major disruptions to truck servicing, leading to extensive queuing and delays for transport companies.

Impact has been felt behind the scenes, but delays in deliveries could occur if the problems are not rectified.

INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEASURES TO IMPORT AIR CARGO DUE TO EMERGING THREAT TO AVIATION SECURITY.

Concerns have been raised regarding air cargo originating in Europe and some central Asian countries. Consequently, the Department of Home affairs (DoHA) is implementing stricter security requirements for shipments originating from 55 countries across Europe and central Asia (Albania, Czech Republic, Ireland, Monaco, Slovakia, Andorra, Denmark, Italy, Montenegro, Slovenia, Armenia, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Finland, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Sweden, Azerbaijan, France, Kyrgyzstan, Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Georgia, Latvia, Poland, Tajikistan, Belgium, Germany, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Turkey, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Greece, Lithuania, Romania, Turkmenistan, Bulgaria, Holy See, Luxembourg, Russia, Ukraine, Croatia, Hungary, Malta, San Marino, UK, Republic if Cyprus, Iceland, Moldova, Serbia, Uzbekistan) following similar actions by the USA and Canada.

Key measures include:
  • Restrictions on Cargo from Unknown Senders: Cargo transported by air that originates from any of the 55 identified countries that is destined for Australia (including transhipped cargo), weighing over 500g, lodged by a sender without an established business relationship, will not be permitted on passenger aircraft (PAX).

  • Additional Inspection for Cargo Aircraft Only (CAO): In the case of CAO, cargo air that originates from any of the 55 identified countries that is destined for Australia (including transhipped cargo), from unknown senders, weighing over 500g, may still be transported if it undergoes additional physical inspection. These additional inspections do not replace normal cargo examination and uplift requirements, which must also continue to be met.
The changes are effective from 14 September 2024, with a Special Security Direction (SSD), issued to affected stakeholders with a requirement to comply immediately.

DoHA has also been liaising with airlines and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to facilitate a smooth implementation of these changes.

The Industry is waiting on the Department to provide broader guidelines and requirements and we will provide an update once its available.

POTENTIAL GOLDEN WEEK SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTION

From 1st October to 7th October, most business and factories in China will close down for the Golden Week holiday. Furthermore, a lot of factories will be running at less than full capacity in the week post the Golden Week holiday.

As importers rush to have goods finished for shipping in the weeks leading up to the shutdown we expect to see already high ocean freight rates increase further as shipping lines serving the North Asia to Australia trade lanes grapple with capacity issues.

We urge you to reach out to your Transways key contact to discuss any urgent shipments that you may have around this GOLDEN WEEK HOLIDAY.

Also a friendly reminder, to reach out in advance to your suppliers to obtain customs documents. Each year we see containers incur unnecessary storage charges due to late customs documentation, as they cant get hold of their suppliers, or payment for TELEX releases are made during the holidays when the banks are shut.

Should you wish to discuss any of these points, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your key contact @ Transways Logistics International.
