Dear Clients,
MARKET UPDATE DEC-24
Another year has come and is nearly gone…. And as has been the trend for the past several, shipping has certainly provided many challenges. We look forward to 2025 market conditions improving for all.
Please see our latest update on key market news, with a Big Announcement for Adelaide importers / exporters.
North Asia – AU market overview
Shipping lines have seen a slow 3-week period in December which is being attributed to the arrival dates of those shipments departing China between 1st to 21st December arriving into AUSTRALIA during the Christmas and New Year holiday period. With that now behind us, carriers are reporting increased bookings for departures in WK 51, WK 52 and into 2025.
General Rate Increase Notifications
With demand increasing (as highlighted above) in the lead up to Chinese New Year (CNY), carriers have once again gone to the market with an aggressive GRI notice (USD500 per TEU) from the 1st Jan-25, time will tell if it sticks or not.
See the below table for details.
As always, Transways will only be adjusting your pricing should the carriers apply the increases.

Potential Port Strike: US Gulf and East Coast Ports – January 2025
The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) are currently in protracted labor negotiations, with a critical deadline of January 15, 2025. Failure to reach an agreement by this date could result in labor strikes that would significantly impact major U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports. If this proceeds, the ripple effect could be felt globally. Just when we were looking ahead for a positive start to shipping in 2025.
Australia – India Free Trade Agreement – Documentation Issues.
Recent reports have indicated discrepancies in the Certificates of Origin (COO) issued by Indian authorities, leading to Australian Border Force (ABF) rejecting the acceptance on many shipments, which has seen DUTY applied to shipments, where they could be “DUTY FREE”.
Australian Govt officials have reached out to their Indian counterparts, in an attempt to reiterate the requirements as per the Free Trade Agreement that both parties signed and accepted.
We expect this to remain a little “clunky” for some time, so if you are importing from India, we may have to apply DUTY at time of arrival if the shippers CoO isn’t compliant. We will then work with you to obtain refunds once correct documentation is re-issued.
