Dear Clients,

**IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ**

The Illegal Logging Prohibition Act 2012 amendment received royal assent on 17th September 2024, the amendment introduced changes with the introduction of the Illegal Logging Rules 2024. These rules came into effect on Monday 3rd March (with no prior communication).

Importers of timber and timber products must comply with the due diligence requirements set out in the new rules. Please find below a “Responsibilities for Importers Factsheet” which sets out your responsibilities as an importer of these products.

[Illegal Logging Fact Sheet]

During the first 6 months of the Rules being in effect, the Department proposes to conduct audits to determine whether Importers have complied with the due diligence requirements for importing these regulated products. These audits may include the testing of timber and timber products using technology that will verify the species and origin of the timber against the information declared at the time of import.

Previously Transways has required our clients to complete an Authority stating they have complied with the due diligence requirements under the Act. This is no longer required and as an importer of a regulated product it is your responsibility alone to comply with the Act and the relevant Rules.
