Dear Clients,

MARKET UPDATE MAR-25

Are GRI’S starting to stick, in particular into the EAST COAST?

2nd half of March rates have seen part GRI’S applied, for EAST COAST AUSTRALIA rates whereas Fremantle and Adelaide remain steady, having not fallen as far as East Coast ports in FEB, therefore not much movement currently on these ports.

GRI announcements
In March you have seen the announcements for GRI’s on the 1st and 15th of March and now again for the 1st April. Market conditions will, as always determine if these are applied partially, in full or not at all.

Blank Sailings
Shipping lines are continuing to use an aggressive blank sailing programme in an attempt to increase rates through the 2nd half of March and into April.

Again, we urge you to discuss current bookings and your required landed date(s) with your Transways contact so that we can tailor your bookings to meet available services, whilst the blank sailings are impacting scheduling.

US Trade War – Will it impact Shipping Demand?
US importers have been trying to anticipate the possible impacts of President Trumps “on again off again” tariff policy, leading to a reported increase in container volume into the US in a race to avoid sky rocketing tariffs.

We therefore have to ask, will this rush see a demand on space / equipment from key export hubs in North Asia driving an artificial peak in demand that the shipping lines will look to capitalise on? Time will tell, but we encourage you to follow the news as it may well impact us down here in Australia.

Hutchinson Ports
Hong Kong based CK Hutchinson Holdings has reached an in principal agreement to sell all its ports & terminals outside of China and Hong Kong to Black-Rock – TiL Consortium. This sale will include Hutchinson terminals at Port Botany and the Port of Brisbane.

Now the interesting part of this, MSC (shipping company) parent company owns 70% of TIL consortium. That wasn’t necessarily reported in the press release.

If the sale goes through, could we expect to see MSC ships call Hutchinson Ports in Brisbane and Sydney in future years?

What happens when you accidentally sink a NZ Navy ship?
The vessel HMNZS Manawanui sank in October 2024 off the coast of Samoa after hitting a reef. How a modern day navy vessel can run aground is a fair question.

In light of the accident, the Samoan government has told its NZ counterpart that it sees no need to salvage the sunken vessel, and it would like the Manawanui to remain as a dive site once all fuel, oil and other pollutants have been removed.
